Meet people at the bottom of the park towards the bridges, plenty of places to go off to (stoney lane path, forested areas in the park, plenty of benches etc.). It's essentially dead after 10-11pm and pitch black, in the rare event someone is walking through you can see peoples torches from a mile away.
A nice central spot for Ambleside. I'd recommend staying clear of the road across the river, people park up and camp in vans overnight.
Just linger for a bit see if anyone shows up ;)
